Young people are accused of being detached and uninvolved in their communities.

Three area high school students running for school boards in Vineland and Millville prove the stereotype false.

We don't know whether Vineland High School seniors Robert Petronglo and Marilee Negron, or Millville Senior High School senior David Gifford have the dedication, knowledge and background needed to make the tough decisions about educational programs, personnel and taxes.

We do, however, admire their desire to get involved in their communities, bring fresh ideas and a new perspective to the boards and have their say on how our schools are run and what is taught. In a statewide survey last year, less than 1 percent of all school board members were younger than 25.

Whoever is elected to the school boards in Abbott districts, which include Vineland, Millville and Bridgeton, will face some hard choices because of the state's new school funding formula. Vineland and Millville will see only 2 percent increases in state aid next year, and probably flat or reduced funding the following years. With inflation in the 4 percent range, and the cost of health care skyrocketing, school board members will have to decide whether to raise school taxes, eliminate academic or athletic programs, cut teachers and staff, or a combination of all these things.

It won't be pretty, but that's the reality the school boards in many Abbott districts will have to deal with in the coming months.

School board members aren't paid. Some ambitious individuals have used school boards as steppingstones to higher office, but most have a genuine desire to improve educational opportunities for all students and give back to the community in which they live.

Such service should never be taken for granted, but unfortunately it is. Perhaps these students can inspire more young people and adults to get involved and add their voice to the community conversation for the betterment of our area."

Millville Schools and the Community

Do you remember the Principal from Wood School at the Community meeting about gangs??
He mentioned using the schools for activities for kids. Here is a good nugget from the school

The Millville Board of Education strongly supports the concept of community use of school facilities. There are many areas in which it is important for school buildings to be used, including:

· Community Adult Education

· High School Equivalency Programs

· Vocational Education

· Recreational Programs

Millville Schools Mission

Hello. In running for an elected position for the Millville Board of Education, the mission of the Millville schools always must be paramount.

Mission

The mission of the Millville School District, in partnership with the community, is to assure that each and every student develops the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to succeed in life.

As partners in this mission, we will provide engaging and challenging curriculum, a safe and secure teaching and learning environment with an active commitment to ensure trust, mutual respect, communication, effective collaboration, and good citizenship.

A new state championship team

The Board of Education honored a new state championship team at Monday's meeting,the girls' 4 x 400 relay team, which accomplished that athletic achievement in January. They were introduced by athletic director Dave LaGamba, who also described the many other athletic successes that have taken place during the current school year.

The Board of Education was unanimous in its congratulations to the champions. Each girl was awarded a certificate to commemorate the feat. Members of the team are: Alyssa Barrow, Britney Kott, Nyrae Newman and Brooke Kott.

Possible Land Swap with Developer

On February 11th, the Planning Board heard about a proposed development of 532 homes near Union Lake.
A parcel of land, owned by the Board of Education, seemingly provides the answer.
The two sides have discussed a land swap designed to accommodate both the possible building of a new elementary school and street access for the development.
In exchange for street access, David Fisher vice president of Matzel and Mumford, said 14.3 acres on the south end of the property would be set aside for possible development of the new school.
In earlier discussions, developers hoped to purchase only a right of way, but were denied.
"The board was not interested in selling us the right of way, they encouraged us to buy the whole thing or not at all," Fisher said. "We have had discussions with the Board of Education and they've indicated a willingness to pursue a transfer of land."
A second meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21. It will include further discussion as well as input from local residents during the public hearing

Why I wish to serve on the Milllville School Board.

I am running for a seat on the Millville School Board on the April 15 election. This election is very important for us in Millville. The state is starting to pull back on their court-ordered mandate to fund our schools. We in Millville need to think pro actively on funding issues. The long term revitalization of Millville depends on our kids and our schools.
I serve on the Neighborhood Policing Task Force, Zoning Board and the Center City Neighborhood Group.
I ask for your support this April 15th.
